2015 USLF Board Meeting Summaries

USLF December 16th, 2015 Board Meeting Summary

The USLF Board of Directors met December 16th for its regular monthly meeting via teleconference/meeting software at 6 p.m. Pacific Time.

- The USLF continues to be financially stable and operate within its budget.  The Treasurer and the Finance committee are assembling a fiscally responsible budget for 2016.  The Board will meet specifically to discuss and coordinate our awards programs (USDF Year End awards, USLF’s own Lipizzan Laurels and Stars awards and the Loving Our Lipizzans program) to keep costs down and to avoid awards being duplicated.

- The Board discussed locations for the 2016 annual member meeting and will be looking at various software options for making the meeting available remotely.  The meeting itself will most likely be in Las Vegas for its ease of access and reasonably priced accommodations.  However, the Board has heard many members’ requests to make the meeting available over the internet and is working to identify meeting software and/or webinar options for those who would rather not travel but still want to be involved.  We’ll keep you posted.  The Board will be previewing some webinar software in January.

- The Breeders Committee has confirmed that Dr. Yvonne Peeters will again be our evaluator for our 2016 Breed Evaluation Tour, tentatively scheduled for September 2016.  So far, sites in North Carolina and Minnesota have been confirmed.  The Breeders committee will meet in January to discuss scheduling and the possibly implementation of a vet check form.

- The Newsletter staff is finalizing the Winter issue and will be sending it to the printer shortly.

- Our Registrar was very busy this past month processing eight registrations and ten transfers; including 4 registrations which had been waiting on information and signatures for a couple of years.  Several more are in process, waiting only for DNA reports.

-  The Registration Committee plans to roll-out our Lipizzan Census this January. This voluntary report is intended to count Lipizzans in North America today as accurately as possible.  Watch your email for details.  Many thanks to the Website committee for making this census easily available!

- The Website committee has also made the annual stallion report available online!  Breeders will now be able to report via our website rather than sending in a form for stallions breeding as many as four mares.  Many thanks to our hard working Website committee!

- The Board voted to select Lynn Smith as Vice President.  Lynn will complete the second year of the Vice President’s term which became vacant by June Boardman’s appointment as President for the upcoming year.  The Vice President’s office will be up for election in 2016.

- The Board discussed at considerable length whether the USLF logo or any part of it could be used as a freeze-brand.  The request came from a member wanting to use the crown to identify a USLF-registered horse as a Lipizzan.  The Board’s consensus was that because our trademark is registered and because branding is increasingly considered cruel, that the USLF logo or any part or it must not be used in any kind of brand.

- The next regularly scheduled Board of Directors meeting will be January 20th.  The USLF Board meets the third Wednesday of every month.

USLF November 18th, 2015 Board Meeting Summary

The USLF Board of Directors met November 18th for its regular monthly meeting via teleconference/meeting software at 6 p.m. Pacific Time.

- The USLF continues to be financially stable and operate within its budget.  The Treasurer requested that committees make their requests for funds to the Finance committee so that the 2016 budget can be prepared.

- Our 2015 North American Lipizzan Symposium and annual member meeting was held Friday, November 5th, and Saturday, November 6th, in Lexington, Kentucky, the same weekend as the USDF’s Finals at the Kentucky Horse Park.  During the meeting, outgoing President Tim Foley was presented with a certificate of appreciation and an embroidered driving apron in gratitude for his vision and guidance of the USLF through 10 years of changes.  During the meeting, the USDF All Breed award ribbons and Lipizzan Laurels ribbons were also awarded.  In addition to attending the usual business meeting, Symposium attendees visited the Kentucky Horse Park and its International Museum of the Horse, took in the USDF Finals and/or toured several horse farms in the area.  The banquet and auction raised money for both the USLF and the Lipizzan Rescue Foundation (LRF).

-  The Board discussed locations for the 2016 annual member meeting and is interested in hearing our members’ suggestions for fun, easily accessible, locations.  We’d love to connect with a regional club who might offer a venue with horses to see!

-  The Newsletter staff is working on the Winter issue and invites articles, pictures, and advertising.

-  Our Registrar processed 6 registrations and 6 transfers; including 4 registrations which had been waiting on information for a couple of years.  The Registration committee stays busy with a steady influx of registrations and transfers.

-  The Registrar and the Breeders Committee is putting the finishing touches on the Lipizzan Census which aims to make the count of Lipizzans in North America today as accurate as possible.  The committee plans to make this voluntary report available to members via email and the website and thanks the Website committee for their hard work to make this easy for everyone to respond.

- The Website committee is also working to make the annual stallion report available online and hopes to have it ready by year end.   Breeders will be able to report via our website rather than sending in a form.  Kudos to our hard working Website committee!

- Our annual Director Elections seated two new Board members, Gayla Edwards and Lynn Smith, filling the seats of outgoing President Tim Foley and outgoing Treasurer Kathy Kelly.  Since there was no candidate for President, the Board voted, per the Bylaws, to give the job to Vice President June Boardman.  The Board also appointed Don Holthofer as Treasurer and Muffin Smith as Secretary for the upcoming year.

- The Loving Our Lipizzans committee is working to develop a program similar to the USDF Heart program.  Details, activities, and signups will be announced soon.

-  The Board used Anymeeting.com software to meet.  This software allows meetings to be held online and may serve as the basis for future regional club meetings and annual member meetings to make presentations real time and interactive for members who don’t wish to travel to the meeting site.  The software also provides significant cost savings over our current teleconference arrangements.  The Board will continue to try this out for a 14-day free trial.

- The next regularly scheduled Board of Directors meeting will be December 16th.  The USLF Board meets the third Wednesday of every month.

USLF October 21st, 2015 Board Meeting Summary

The USLF Board of Directors met October 21st for its regular monthly meeting via teleconference at 6 p.m. Pacific Time.

- The USLF continues to be financially stable and operate within its budget.  The Treasurer requested Board members to begin considering 2016 programs and committee activities so that a budget can be formed to accomplish as many goals as financially possible.

- Our 2015 North American Lipizzan Symposium and annual member meeting will be held Friday, November 5th, and Saturday, November 6th, in Lexington, Kentucky.  This year our Symposium coincides with USDF’s U.S. Dressage Finals and Symposium attendees will have a time to watch the USDF classes, visit the Kentucky Horse Park and its International Museum of the Horse, or tour several horse farms in the area.  We’re looking forward to seeing everyone in Lexington!

-  The Fall Newsletter continues to use more color pages for features, photographs, and advertisements.  The Newsletter staff is currently looking for interesting articles and pictures for the upcoming Winter issue.  We’ve also received requests from overseas for subscriptions to our Newsletter and we’re excited that our reader base is growing beyond North America.  This extra exposure will certainly improve communications with our international Lipizzan community and will offer our advertisers expanded exposure to Europe!

- The Mid-Atlantic Lipizzan Association (MALA) and the USLF co-sponsored a Lipizzan breed class at the prestigious Dressage at Devon event in Devon, Pennsylvania, October 2nd through 4th.  Five Lipizzans were shown on the triangle in the Dixon Oval, including two from Tempel Farms.  The famous Tempel Lipizzans also performed several times before appreciative crowds during the weekend.  MALA also organized an excellent turnout of Lipizzans for the Baroque Equestrian Games, held at the Virginia Horse Center, Lexington, Virginia, September 18th – 20th.

-  A relatively quiet month for registrations, our Registrar processed 3 registrations and 1 transfer; with a number still in process pending DNA results or additional information.

-  The Registrar and the Breeders Committee has begun work on a long planned Yearly Herd Report.  The committee expects to complete this work soon to hopefully coincide with the annual Stallion Reports.

- Our annual Director Elections are underway.  If you haven’t already, please visit our website to see the candidates’ statements and to cast your vote.  Time is running out and at least twenty-five percent of our regular members must vote in order for the election to be official so please vote!  Our organization is open, responsive, and tuned into our members and our democratic elections of our Directors make this possible.

-  The Board discussed approaches to improving member engagement in the future.  A project to investigate available online services is underway so that the USLF can hold meetings and offer educational seminars and training online.  The Board aims to overcome the geographical dispersion of our membership and make information readily accessible and interactive, improving communication across our membership.  Eventually, we envision including access to regional clubs as well as the national organization.  Members have long asked that annual meetings be somehow held online and the Board is undertaking this project to see if available technology will meet our needs for meetings and more.

- The next regularly scheduled Board of Directors meeting will be November 18th.  The USLF Board meets the third Wednesday of every month.

- On the international front, The USLF Board was unanimous in its support of a request by a member to offer a proposal for inclusion on the LIF Private Breeders Group Agenda at the LIF General Assembly, October 8th – 11th in Provence, France.

The proposal is to create a LIF Registration Working Group (RWG).  The purpose of this RWG will be to provide a forum for the registration experts from each member organization to develop camaraderie and create a resource group.  The core tenants of the RWG will be mutual assistance, adherence to LIF policy, and preservation of horse records in ongoing pursuit of accuracy.

- The Board is unanimous in support of members using some method of identification to uniquely identify their Lipizzans.  Whether a member choses to microchip their Lipizzan(s) or use some other identification, the USLF wants its members to know that we have room in our database to record whatever unique identifier an owner choses.  We’d also like everyone to know that the U.S. Equestrian Federation offers additional ways to record individual horse identification with the USEF Performance Horse Registry (PHR) and American Performance Horse Registry (APH).  Please see www.USEF.org  and www.phr.com for details.
